Al Baaqi

Baqāʾ is remaining — what is still there when the rest has gone. The root runs twenty-one times through the Qur’an, and its best-known shape is a plural: al-bāqiyāt aṣ-ṣāliḥāt, the lasting good things, set in one ayah against wealth and children as the ornament of this life.

The written form of the name is not in the Qur’an; the name is carried by the list. Most of what we arrange our days around is, by this root’s measure, temporary — and that is a description rather than a reproach.
