Al Qayyoom

Qāma is to stand, and the intensive shape here is the one who stands and keeps everything else standing. From the same root come iqāma, the setting-up of the prayer, and qawwām, whoever maintains a thing and keeps it from falling over.

It appears three times in the Qur’an and al-Ḥayy comes immediately before it in every one — twice as al-Ḥayy al-Qayyūm, and once in Sūrat Ṭā Hā, where faces are described bowing to the Living, the Sustaining. Living and holding-up are never said apart. Things stay upright for reasons that are mostly not visible from underneath them.
