Al Haiyy

Ḥayy is alive now — not “immortal”, which Arabic would say another way. The word is a present state rather than a guarantee about the future, which is a strange thing to use as a name and the reason it is one.

Half of the eight ayat carrying this written form are not the name at all, but the living thing brought out of the dead one, a sentence repeated in four different surahs. Of the four that are the name, two are al-Ḥayy al-Qayyūm — one of them the opening of the Throne Ayah — and one is an instruction: rely on the Living who does not die. Life that is not borrowed from anywhere is hard to picture, which may be the point of the name.
