Al Haadi

Hadā is to show someone the way, and hadiyya, a gift, comes from the same root — it is the word for what the queen of Sabaʾ sends ahead of herself. Guidance as something handed over rather than withheld.

The definite form is not in the Qur’anic text, though the opening surah of the Book is a request for exactly this. The word appears twice without its article, and both times as a denial: there is no guide for whoever Allah leaves astray, and you are not a guide for the blind. Being shown a road is not the same as being carried down it, and that is not a complaint.
