Reflection

Akhkhara is to keep something for later. The same root gives ākhira, the life that comes after this one, and al-ākhir, the last.

This name and the one before it are a pair the list refuses to separate: what is brought forward, and what is held back. Neither written form is in the text, and the root spends most of its time in the Qur’an naming the thing that comes after rather than the delay itself. Late is a description, not a verdict.
