Al Hameed

Ḥamd is praise given for what something is, not thanks for what it did — Arabic keeps shukr for that. It is the root of the line that opens the Book, which means the first thing the Qur’an does is use it.

Of the ten ayat carrying this written form, five have al-Ghaniyy immediately before it and three al-ʿAzīz. Three of the ten are describing a road: the path of the Praiseworthy. Praise offered to someone who needs none of it is the only kind that is entirely a gift.
