Reflection

Karam is generosity and nobility at once — in Arabic the generous person and the noble one are described with one word — and karāma is the dignity a person is owed simply for being one.

Of the three ayat carrying this written form, one calls the Throne noble and one asks the reader directly what it was that deceived him about his generous Lord. The third is spoken to somebody in the middle of being punished: taste, you are the mighty, the noble. There the words are true of no one, and are being used as a taunt. Generosity in this root is not something the giver is diminished by; it is what somebody is like when nothing is at stake for them.
