Reflection

Ḥifẓ is memorising — keeping something whole inside you — and a ḥāfiẓ is the one who has done it. Guarding and remembering are one word here. Which is a fair description of what remembering actually is.

The definite written form is not in the Qur’anic text; the name is carried by the list. The word without its article is there eight times, and some of those are a prophet saying plainly that he is not one — that the keeping was never his job. What is being kept is not only what you can see being kept.
