المُذِلُّAl Mudhil
The Humiliator
Scroll on for a reflection, and where you’ll meet it
Reflection
Dhull is lowness — but the same root gives dhalūl, an animal gentle enough to be led. It is the word for the cow in Sūrat al-Baqara that had never been broken to the plough, and for the earth in Sūrat al-Mulk, made dhalūlan so that people could walk about on it.
This written form is not in the Qur’anic text; the name sits in the received list, opposite al-Muʿizz, and the act it describes is put in a sentence instead. Being humbled and being humble are not the same event, and the second one can be a mercy — the root itself seems to know that a thing brought low is often a thing made usable.
