Reflection

Khalq is making with proportion — the root carries measuring as much as it carries creating. The same three letters give khuluq, a person’s character: the shape a soul has settled into, which the Qur’an calls great in one of its gentlest ayat. Making and having a shape are one word here.

In a single ayah of Sūrat al-Ḥashr this name is followed by al-Bāriʾ and al-Muṣawwir — three moments of one act — and the ayah goes on to say that the most beautiful names belong to Him. Made, then, and not assembled by accident.
